Week 1 of #lizzybs365 photo challenge

So it begins - with slight nerves and trepidation. What if I cannot find something to photograph everyday. What if I run out of inspiration or only take bad photographs?

Well this is actually an opportunity. An opportunity for me to grow as a photographer, to push my limits, to try new styles without upsetting my portfolio, to showcase work I couldn’t otherwise showcase to you on my main @lizzybiggsphotography instagram account, or wouldn’t choose to show on my @lizzy_and_life personal and travel instagram.

So lets begin….

Day 1 of 365 - Snowdrops

Ok - so on the first day of the challenge I couldn’t even bring myself to post just one photograph!!!

Day 3 - Golden Hour

Today I retrieved my old Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 which is a bit of legacy glass with beautiful bokeh and used to be my absolute favourite manual lens. However, I discovered that unlike when I shot Pentax and converted this beautiful M42 lens, because of the large flange distance (the distance from the focal plane to the lens mount) cannot focus to infinity on a Nikon.

So today I focused my 50mm lens at a distance of half a metre - no more and no less!

Day 4 - Mound of Washing Up

This was my first day of the challenge to have to choose to seek out a subject. Previously they had thrown themselves at me, but not today. So off I went to look around the house and thought why not document my real messy life? Again playing with focal points and legacy glass!

Day 4: Well since this is my life, its not all flowers! Sometimes it's coming home to a mound of washing up in the sink... To busy working, creating and studying for half the weak, that cleaning gets blitzed weekly. But even that same mound of washing up, playing with focus and legacy glass can provide an interesting focus.

They say - a tidy house is a tidy mind - and - clutter is the physical manifestation of unmade decisions fuelled by procrastination (Christina Scalise). Well I know which end of the spectrum I fall at (refer to my sink incase you hadn't guessed! Instead I'm out having coffee because people come first) What about you?? Tidy and cluttered?

Day 5 - Ceiling Details

So today I discovered I’m not yet brave enough to move onto street photography and publish strangers… So I looked hard for something interesting that didn’t include people - the ceiling!!!

At the #necbirmingham the lighting was interesting. Hardly visible unless you focus upon it, the electrical cables in the roof - testing out the sigma art lens series 24-35 f2 and 24-70 f2.8

Day 6 - Minimalist Construction

What did I learn today? That sometimes zooming in on details and processing into black and white can create an image with a lot of intrigue and mystery but which remains strangely calming! What do you think?

Day 7 - Brother

Definitely not my best portrait in terrible spot lighting and super quick manual focusing at 50cm on a 50mm lens. Definitely distorts facial features and up close shows every detail - as such I didn’t lighten the eyes (at least there is one catch light) edit shadows, soften skin or anything. However…. I love the fact it really is my brother and his eyes are humouring me not pushing me away.

Therefore this terrible portrait is one I love. Sometimes photo’s are good for the meaning while being technically terrible!

Day 7 Playing with my old #supertakumar50mmf14 on an #m42tonikonf and my lovely brother let me try (with a set unalterable focus distance) to take his birthday portrait.
It was a lovely meal @the_white_swan_edgbaston.
